Started in 2019, with improvements ongoing throughout 2020 and projected to continue into 2021, the fish habitat enhancement project on Murray Creek will provide additional habitat for important fish species in the watershed.
The project is intended to improve conditions for spawning, incubation, juvenile rearing, and overwintering portions of the Chinook salmon, Rainbow trout, and other fish species life cycles. The project seeks to rehabilitate riparian ecosystems function by constructing an approximately 430 m2 or 1000m3 off-channel overwintering pond in the floodplain of Murray Creek.
It is considered probable that rainbow trout will utilize the project site; additionally it is probable that other important species such as juvenile Chinook salmon will utilize this section of stream, and may well winter in the proposed wintering pond. The restoration and enhancement of Murray Creek between KP2+500 and KP9+900, will improve spawning, rearing and overwintering habitat, and increase the resilience of Murray Creek fish populations to environmental stressors by providing additional and higher quality habitat, contribute to increasing overall fish population size and, in regards to Chinook salmon, contribute towards increasing smolt production. Riparian vegetation, amphibians and wildlife will also benefit from this project.
