Get Involved

There are several ways in which individuals, industry and landowners can get involved in NEWSS. The vision of NEWSS is to act in an advisory capacity for both landowners and government, to serve as a vehicle for the delivery of incentives and investments into the Nechako watershed and to act as a trust that continually inspires people, landowners and industry to demonstrate high quality land and water stewardship. In other words, NEWSS is here to help the community, in particular the agricultural community, to be good stewards of the land and water that feeds the Nechako River.

Landowners, be it ranchers, business operations or single-family properties, that have property within any of the tributary watersheds of the Nechako River that are interested in learning more about stream rehabilitation are encouraged to contact NEWSS. If you have identified a potential project, or are curious if your buildings or operations are affecting the waterways on your property, contacting NEWSS is an excellent and safe way to get informed.

NEWSS facilitates and conducts stream rehabilitation work within tributaries of the Nechako Watershed, working with landowners, organizations and industry to promote land and water stewardship to protect endangered and threatened species.

Over the years, NEWSS has conducted over 50 habitat restoration projects within the 30 tributary waterhsheds of the Nechako River. Examples include replacement of culverts to reduce the risk of wash-out and to eliminate barriers to fish passage; off-channel watering for livestock; and, streambank armouring to reduce erosion.

From the Chilako River to Saul’s Creek, rehabilitation projects have shown improvements to agriculture lands and livestock watering systems, and to fish and wildlife habitat. In each case, on-farm collaboration by the landowner has proven to be a huge part of the success of these stewardship projects.

Landowners can be proud of their participation and contribution to water and land stewardship, and as such, are encouraged to hang a NEWSS project sign at the project site or at their front gate. This sign signifies the landowner's collaboration and commitment to water and land stewardship.
